research in public spaces

The commons has been a topic of much debate for centuries. Many contend that it simply cannot exist - that there is a tragedy of the commons which guarantees all attempts at preserving any kind of public space as futile.

Whether this is true or not, our public space is still a very important part of our society. We continue to use the term and it helps to grease certain political agendas. If public space does not exist, the term should be quickly removed from our vocabulary. If it can exist, then we need to discover how.

1000camels devotes half of its resources to exploring the issues around public space. We do so with real world landscape architecture projects, as well as with virtual social spaces constructed on the web. It is our goal to further develop our understanding of public spaces, and to present our findings to the commons.
